In 2020, the Inspector-General of the Australian Defence Force Afghanistan Inquiry report, also known as the Brereton Report, found credible information that members of the Australian Special Forces had committed war crimes during their operations in Afghanistan between 2005 and 2016.

In May of 2023, Australian Defence Force chief, Angus Campbell wrote to several current and former Australian Defence Force members informing them that their honours for distinguished and conspicuous service on warlike operations in Afghanistan could soon be cancelled.

A recommendation for the termination of decorations was made by Angus Campbell to Defence Minister Richard Marles recently.
