RSL Victoria pays tribute to the crew members tragically lost following Friday night’s military helicopter crash off the north Queensland coast as part of a Talisman Sabre training exercise.
Search and rescue teams have recovered helicopter debris from the water. Although the four crew members aboard the helicopter have not yet been found, all hope of their survival has now faded.
The missing crew members have been identified as pilots Captain Dan Lyon and Lieutenant Max Nugent, and Warrant Officer Class 2 Phil Laycock and Corporal Alex Naggs from Holsworthy army barracks in Sydney. RSL Victoria thanks all involved in search and rescue efforts for their tireless work following the horrible crash.
RSL State President, Dr Robert Webster OAM said, “Tragic incidents like this are a sobering reminder of not just the efforts of our Defence Force, but the risks they all take every single day to keep us safe. We send our warmest thoughts and condolences to the families of those lost in this accident and pay tribute to the bravery and dedication of the crew in defending our country.
"We are mindful of the huge rippling effect that tragedies like this can cause. We also keep the entire squadron of those lost in our thoughts, as well as any Defence Force member, past or present, who may be affected by this incident. We offer our full support and assistance to any who need it. This will be a difficult time for so many connected to these personnel.”
